Whether perceivers implicitly expected that a new member would perform the same movement to the previously visited location (i.e., exhibit shallow feature-based behavior) or a new movement to the previously visited object (i.e., exhibit deep property-based behavior) was recorded. Participants were asked to view group members' goal-directed behaviors toward an object. The current study investigated whether the deep properties or shallow features of behaviors are implicitly expected to be consistent across members of highly entitative groups, by exploiting the notion that goals-as deep properties-and movements-as shallow features-can be dissociated in object-directed behaviors. The most notable finding is that, when a group is perceived as being an entity rather than a loose aggregate of people, group members are expected to share characteristics and behave consistently Hamilton et al., 2009).
Substantial work has also pursued this issue by documenting several consequences of entitativity, including dispositional inferences about members, the type and depth of cognitive processing about members, stereotyping, and so on (Agadullina & Lovakov, 2018 Dasgupta et al., 1999 McConnell et al., 1997 Rydell et al., 2007 Spencer-Rodgers et al., 2007 VanBergen et al., 2020 Yzerbyt et al., 1998). Since Campbell's initial discussion of entitativity, many cues that affect entitativity have been identified, including perceptual cues (e.g., collective movement, common fate) even the type of group plays a role in judging entitativity (Crump et al., 2010 Igarashi & Kashima, 2011 Ip et al., 2006 Lakens, 2010 Lickel et al., 2000 Sani et al., 2005 Svirydzenka et al., 2010).
